When was Mildred Taylor born? Mildred was born in Jackson, Mississippi on September 13, 1943. Her parents are Wilbert Lee Taylor(father) and Deletha Marie Davis Taylor(mother). She was born in the middle of World War II.

Where did Mildred move? Her dad went to Ohio looking for a job and found one in Toledo. He then brought all his family members.

How Mildred’s life got started Mildred graduated from Scott High School in 1961. She graduated from the University of Toledo. However she got her master’s degree in the University of Colorado. After that she joined the Peace Crops and taught as an English and History teacher. Then she moved to Los Angeles and started her writing career.

Mildred’s awards Mildred’s first book was Song of the Trees which was published in 1975. It won the council on Interracial Books for children award. Her second book was Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry which was published in 1976. It won the Newberry Award from the American library in 1977.

Mildred’s inspiration Her biggest inspiration was her grandfather. Her family was also big help to her. Her grandfather would tell her stories her family history. She would also go back to Mississippi to help her write.

Her adult life facts She was married to Zeal Daly. Three years later she got divorced. Mildred Taylor has one daughter. Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry was her best selling book.

Mildred D. Taylor Day In 2004 in Mississippi everyone celebrated Mildred D. Taylor Day. They had it at Mississippi University. People from school children to adults came to see Mildred Taylor speak.
