THESIS SENTENCE A declarative sentence that summarizes the main point of the speech/article.

Motivation Motivation is telling the audience WHY they should be interested in your topic—how it will impact them and their lives. Give them a reason to be concerned about your topic.

Orientation/Overview Tell the audience what the main points in your speech will be. Give a forecast of the things that will be included in your speech. You may also wish to define any terms that are needed to understand the concepts in your speech.

Assignment Prepare an introduction that has all four parts labeled for ONE of the following topics: Inform how to needlepoint Inform about the effects of the Vietnam War Persuade to purchase Homecoming buttons Persuade to sign up for organ donations
