Summarize things so far…
10 9 8 What does the slope on a distance vs. time graph tell us? Distance (m) 7 6 What is the object’s speed from: 0-3 sec: 3-5 sec: 5-11 sec: 5 4 3 2 1 Time (sec)
2
Distance vs. Displacement
It is a 16 mile drive from my house to LCWM. If I start at my house and drive to LCWM and then back to my house What is my distance traveled? What is my displacement? If I start at my house and drive to LCWM In the diagram above: What is my distance traveled? What is my displacement?
3
Displacement is based on position
Instead of graphing distance vs. time, we can graph position vs. time Graphing distance vs. time is fine, but it can only tell us how fast an object is going…..not which way (direction) If we want to know how fast an object is going AND which direction it is heading, we would want a position vs. time graph When we talk about HOW FAST and IN WHAT DIRECTION an object is going, we’re talking about its VELOCITY 5 4 3 2 1 X (m) t (sec) -1 -2 -3 -4 -5
4
In the previous diagram
What is the object’s velocity from: 0-2 sec: 2-3 sec: 3-5 sec: 5-7 sec: 7-8 sec: 8-10 sec: 0-5 sec: 0-10 sec: What is the distance traveled from: 0-5 sec: 0-10 sec: What is the displacement from: What does the slope on a position vs. time graph tell us? What does the y-intercept on a position vs. time graph tell us?

Being able to calculate speed
An object travels 20 km in 100 min. What is the object’s speed in km/hr? A car going 20 mi/hr travels for 240 seconds. How far did the car travel in miles? An object travels at 30 m/s and goes a total of 200 m. How long did it take the object to travel that far in seconds? In minutes?
