The First Thanksgiving Thanksgiving was first celebrated in Plymouth in 1621 by the colonists who came to America on the Mayflower and by the neighboring Native Americans.

Here’s an Invitation ! 4 Captain Miles Standish, the leader of the pilgrims invited the Native Americans to their village for a wonderful Thanksgiving feast.

WOWIE! What a Time! The feast lasted three long days !

What’s on the Menu? 4 For the feast, the Indians brought deer, wild turkeys, beans, fish, corn, maize and berries.

A New Pilgrim Tradition 4 The Pilgrims made it a yearly tradition to have a day set aside for Thanksgiving after their fall harvest.

What a Wonderful Idea! 4 During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress made a suggestion to have a yearly day of Thanksgiving.

Go New York! In 1817, the state of New York adopted Thanksgiving Day as an annual custom.

Hurray for Lincoln! 4 President Abraham Lincoln appointed Thanksgiving a holiday in 1863. Each president has issued a proclamation making the fourth Thursday in November the national holiday.
