What you need is discipline, musical talent, people skills, perseverance, and physical stamina.

You have to sing or play instruments for live audiences and in recording studios. To get the job you have to practice and audition. If you get the job, you have to rehearse a lot. You also have to find a location and book yourself a gig. You also have to get comfortable with traveling. And most of the time, singers promote their careers by maintaining their reputation and giving autographs.

The training is extensive because you need to learn how to play multiple instruments.
