To be a compound sentence you must have 2 independent clauses. If you don’t, then it is a simple sentence. The boys were jumping on the trampoline, riding their bikes, and chasing the girls. TRICK : Cover up the, conjunction and everything after it. Make sure those words form an independent clause. THEN: Cover up the, conjunction and everything before it. Make sure those words form an independent clause. If both sides do then you have a COMPOUND SENTENCE The girls ran away from the boys, but the boys continued to chase them.

Is it Simple or Compound? Maxwell is a sumo wrestler. Maxwell trains very hard, but he has never won a competition. Sumo is the national sport of Japan There are six major sumo tournaments held each year in Japan, and they attract the attention of the entire nation. A sumo ring measures twelve feet in diameter and is made of sand and clay. In Japan, a tournament is called a basho.

Is it Simple or Compound? The goal in sumo wrestling is to either throw your opponent to the ground or to force him out of the ring. Sumo has no weight classes for competition, and many wrestlers weigh more than 350 pounds. The wrestler’s big stomach provides him a low center of gravity, and it helps him withstand a charge by his opponent. Every sumo competition begins with a religious-type ceremony. Before each match, the competitors clap their hands to awaken the gods, they throw salt into the ring to purify the ground, and they stamp their feet to crush evil. The referee gives the signal, so the wrestlers take their positions.
