Subject-Verb Agreement Created by Andrea White 2 nd Grade

The subject and the verb in a sentence need to agree or go together correctly. One boy plays basketball. Four boys play basketball.

If the subject is singular (only one), the present-tense verb has an –s or –es. Dad walks me to my car. Grandpa watches my game. The door slams shut.

Do not add –s or –es to a present-tense verb that tells about a plural (more than one) subject. Children work hard at school. The turtles swim in the pond. The boys run fast.

The men (clean, cleans) the cars. clean

The policeman (chase, chases) the bad guy. chases

The fisherman (catch, catches) a lot of fish. catches
