1 Subject-Verb Agreement Created by Andrea White 2 nd Grade

2 The subject and the verb in a sentence need to agree or go together correctly. One boy plays basketball. Four boys play basketball.

3 If the subject is singular (only one), the present-tense verb has an –s or –es. Dad walks me to my car. Grandpa watches my game. The door slams shut.

4 Do not add –s or –es to a present-tense verb that tells about a plural (more than one) subject. Children work hard at school. The turtles swim in the pond. The boys run fast.

5 Let’s find the correct verbs together! The bird (chirp chirps) loudly. chirps

6 The men (clean, cleans) the cars. clean

7 The policeman (chase, chases) the bad guy. chases

8 The fisherman (catch, catches) a lot of fish. catches

9 Geese (fly, flies) south for the winter. fly

10 Mice (sleep, sleeps) in the cage. sleep

11 The fox (watch, watches) the rabbit. watches

12 Dad (play, plays) video games. plays
