2 Objective: To learn about Cave Art and what it can tell us about Ancient people. _____________________________________ Since there were no books written during the Stone Age, the cave art is very important. It gives us a glimpse into the ancient world.

3 Pictograph: Painting on a surface like a cave wall. Petroglyph: Design carved into rock or other surface.

4 Cave of Lascaux, France Discovered by four boys on September 12 th, 1940. Caves are filled with pictographs and petroglyphs of hundreds of animals. Dated to about 17,00 years ago.

6 There are almost 600 pictures of animals, mostly horses. Other animals painted are stags, bulls, and bison Only one man is painted.

11 Why did they paint the cave? What do the paintings mean? Just the animals that were around at that time. Instructions on how to hunt or not to hunt. The cave was used for religious ceremonies. Paintings were for good luck in hunting.

12 Cave Art in 2012 Now it is your turn to create “Cave” Art. You will create your own work of art that would tell future archaeologists what our culture was like. Consider what people from the future would learn about us from your artwork. Your painting/drawing should include things that are important to you or important to our culture

13 Cave Art in 2010 Instructions: Using a large piece of construction paper and your choice of art utensils, construct a piece of “cave” art that would allow someone 17,000 years from now to understand what our culture was like. Points: 25

14 Cave Art Wall of Fame Mr. Olson will choose 5 finalists from each class 6 th Grade Teachers will vote on top 3 from each class Those 3 will be recognized on the Cave Art Wall of Fame for all the world to see! Good Luck!
