* Identified 207 children with schizophrenic mothers [‘high risk’] * Along with 104 children with non-schizophrenic mothers (matched control) [‘low risk’] * Aged between 10-18 at the start of the study * Matched on: age, gender, parent socio- economic class and urban/rural residence

* A follow up study was conducted in 1974 and 1989 * The results were published by Parnas et al in 1993

* The results suggested there was a strong genetic link in schizophrenia * Schizophrenia diagnosed in 16.2% of high risk group compared to 1.9% in low risk group * Schizotypal personality disorder diagnosed in 18.8% of high risk group against 5% of low risk group

* Combining the figures for the 2 disorders = 35% in high-risk group and 6.9% in low-risk group * Similar findings found in the New York High Risk Project = 25 yr follow-up (Erlennmeyer-Kimling et al. 1997)
