2. Meeting Facilitator I. D. Side You are a very experienced at being in charge of meetings between young people and victims of crime. You should remain calm, but serious, throughout the meeting and try to help the young person to understand how their behaviour affects other people. You need to take control of the meeting, stop anyone speaking out of turn and make sure that everyone has a chance to speak. This is how the meeting runs: Ask everyone to introduce themselves. Ask the young person to discuss the offence, all of the details are needed. Tell them to look at the victim when they speak. Ask the victim how he was affected. Ask the parent how they feel. Ask the victim supporter if they wish to say anything. Ask the young person if they have anything to say (this is when you want them to apologise and they should look at the victim when they say it).

3. Young Person - Bart Timpson You were with your best friend walking along Wigan Road to meet some friends. On the way you picked up some stones from a local residents garden and thought it would be funny to throw them across the road in front of travelling cars. The stones hit a bright yellow car causing it to swerve. You then ran away. You have been told to attend the meeting and you are upset that you caused the damage and your father has taught you that you should always apologise if you do something wrong. You do not think the victim will be upset by what you did because you think it was an accident so you initially think it is a bit funny, especially because the car was bright yellow. Make a joke of the car being yellow. If the panel members tell you to behave you must do so straight away and take it all very serious. When you are asked if you have anything to say to the victim say you are sorry and mean it.

4. Parent Homer Timpson You are there to support Bart during the meeting and are very supportive. The panel members might ask you how you feel about the offence and you should say that you are very disappointed by Bart’s behaviour and you should look at the victim and say you are very sorry. You have heard that the damage caused to the car was expensive and your family cannot afford to pay large sums in compensation to the victim but you are willing to make some contribution if asked to do so.
