2 Personal story June 16 th – SpR in EM; finishes shift 2200hrs June 17 th - Consultant in EM- the only one available; others on the college conference somewhere nice. Excited about running the ‘show’ clinically, but quickly realised how ill-prepared I was for the business!

3 The Need: Large Trust with 600+ training/non-training grade doctors A wish to engage this large talent pool in service improvements A recognition of the need to better prepare trainees for consultant roles Curriculum/ARCPs requiring leadership & management training.

4 The Response: Senior Specialty Lead Registrar for each Specialty A conduit between Management and trainee/non-training grade and PGMDE 6 x Day Development Programme Undertake a quality/service improvement project – working with management Awards ceremony

5 Development Programme Content Overview and structure of NHS Personal Development and Useful Tools, i.e. MBTI/Emotional Intelligence Working on projects and managing change The Business of Healthcare Learning from patients

6 Projects include: Practice PACES": A PACES revision course for medical trainees Improving Induction and Training for Sexual Health Staff` Remembering the forgotten neurology patient.. Maintaining an open access service for rheumatology patients Emergency Chest Opening at King's - Improving Availability of Instrument Packs

7 The Outcomes: 3 rd cohort with trainees from a wide range of specialties learning and working together Rolling 6 monthly programme 1 st Awards Ceremony Mr Michael Parker, Chairman presenting to Mr Daniel Robb, Cardiothoracic Senior Trainee

8 Mr Michael Parker, Chairman presenting to Dr Omar Mukhtar, Clinical Pharmacology, RCP Associate Tutor Excellent participant feedback: “The Lead Specialty programme at KCH allows a more practical exposure to management and leadership beyond that provided by conventional Management courses” (Nicola Gullick,NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Rheumatology) “The programme takes a wide range of trainees from different specialities. It is actually quite rare for this to happen in an educational environment by a senior trainee stage as most courses and conferences I go to are fairly limited to my own areas of clinical interest.” (Helen Matthews SpR Hepatology/Gastroenterology/G(I)M)
