Improving Access to Information

What are we really talking about? How can SharePoint be used to gain access to information that is held in other systems? Utilize SharePoint as a tool to consolidate and view information in disparate systems. Understand what technologies support SharePoint to help this happen. Access to Information

Structured vs. Unstructured Structured Relational database SQL Oracle Access XML OLAP (cube) Unstructured Documents Email Different Types of Data

Relational Data Tables (rows and columns) Database system made up of many tables / queries XML (Extensible Markup Language) Hierarchical structure File based or web services OLAP (OnLine Analytical Processing) Cube structure (multi-dimensional) Typically fed from relational database Slice n dice Structured Data

Front Page Data View web part Office Web Components (OWC) XML Web part Scorecard Accelerator Other Approaches Custom web parts Display reporting tools in web part (i.e. SQL Reporting Services) 3 rd Party web parts SharePoint tools to work with Structured Data

Front Page provides addition of Data View web part to pages Can connect to multiple source types Formatting options Style Sorting / Grouping Filtering Read-only Refreshed when page is refreshed Front Page Data View Web Part

Provides familiar Office experience on web Allows user to interact with data via the web Can connect to multiple different data source types Components loaded onto web server Web Parts Datasheet Pivot Chart Pivot Table Pivot View Spreadsheet Quick quote Web capture Office Web Components (OWC)

Provides connection to XML data sources Typed in XML File-based XML Allows for custom formatting via XSL (style sheet) XML Web Part

Case Study Industrial Automation Engineering

Challenge Securing an existing relationship with a client by providing them with a higher-level of customer service through better and more timely information. Case Study: Industrial Automation Engineering

Background IAE is contracted to monitor and support the devices used to measure the input/output of Diesel Fuel used to power BNSF Locomotives. The reliability of these devices (Fuel Flow, Tank-level Meters) and the fuel data they record is mission-critical to BNSF from an accounting standpoint. The accurate and timely reporting of daily variance data, inside/outside of an acceptable tolerance-levels, is key to understanding whether devices require technical support or not. Case Study: Industrial Automation Engineering

If the fuel-flow or tank level metrics exceed the tolerance-levels, or equipment has failed etc… BNSF wants to know: What is the technical issue? (software/hardware) Where does the problem exist? When will the issue be fixed? How will it be resolved? Who is accountable for resolving it? Case Study: Industrial Automation Engineering

BNSF Concerns BNSF wants to know if the data coming from the devices is acceptable Is the data reliable enough to import into their accounting software? Is IAE doing all they can to be responsive to the issues and have a plan to resolve them? Case Study: Industrial Automation Engineering
