What is the UN? Founded in 1945 after the Second World War by 51 countries. The UN has 4 main purposes 1.To keep peace throughout the world 2.To develop friendly relations among nations 3.To help nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each other’s rights and freedoms 4.To be a centre for harmonising the actions of nations to achieve these goals.

Now has 193 Member States Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the UN official languages. There are currently more than 100,000 UN peacekeepers in 16 peace operations.

What do they do? The work of the United Nations reaches every corner of the globe. Best known for; –Peacekeeping –conflict prevention –humanitarian assistance The specialised agencies works on –Sustainable development –Refugees protection –Disaster relief –Counter terrorism –Disarmament –Promotes democracy –Human rights –Economic and social development –Health –Clearing landmines –Food production

How does it work? The structure of the UN is based around its charter. The United Nations Charter consists of 111 articles. These articles explain how the United Nations works.

The UN have been successful… –Forcing Iraq out of Kuwait during the Gulf War –After 9/11 the UN supported the US when they invaded Afghanistan THE SECURITY COUNCIL

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY Everyone has an equal say Each country has one vote no matter how wealthy or powerful 2/3 majority to pass a vote
