7 As the Leader name suggests, it is a method of mobilising and delivering rural development in local rural communities, rather than a fixed set of measures to be implemented. However !

Economic /Skills/ Community • Farmers, farming families and foresters. • Local farming organisations such as cooperative groups. • Businesses operating in rural areas. • Locally based voluntary organisations and community groups. • Local partnerships such as market town partnerships, community planning groups or similar.

Rural Skills Cumbria (SAC Consulting) Training programme for farm + forestry £865,015 project total £692,701 grant allocation Joint CF&D (50%) SB&E (50%) 6,500 training days to be delivered E.g. Hedge laying, coppicing and trailer handling

13 M311 – Farm Diversification
Abbot Park Farm – Bandrake Head Catering equipment £35, project total £14, grant allocation 1 FTE created Keeping farming family on the farm.

14 M312 – Business creation and development
Traction Engine Driving Experience – Broughton In Furness New road tyres £8, project total £3,525 grant allocation 2 FTE safeguarded Delivering tourist experience days + actual driving tests for traction engine owners

15 M321 – Basic services for the economy and rural population
Village Agents - South Lakeland Age UK Ambleside, Grasmere and Staveley £27,834 project total £11,452 grant allocation 1 FTE created (x3 individuals) Promotion of social inclusion E.g. Accessing allowances, benefits, knowledge transfer + prevention schemes (electric blankets)

16 Where next? RDPE will continue to operate through to 2013, as required
under the European Rural Development Regulation. CAP changes are currently being scrutinized, may result in ‘Leader like’ programme starting in 2015.

17 Where next? In UK, 2015 timeframe is more likely to manifest itself as European Social Fund may be possible source of funding. European Region Development Fund may also be possible funding source. Defra commitment to upland areas may remain key focus. CF&D/LDNP well placed if uplands are key priority. Any change in UK administration may change focus/emphasis on rural affairs.
