Philip II of Macedonia Aim: to have an overview understanding of the rule and achievements of Philip II of Macedonia Starter: From these images, what inferences can we make about Philip?

Philip the King Philip was born in 382 BC- youngest son of Amyntas III. He was held hostage by the Greeks in 368-365. Came to the throne as Macedonia was disintegrating after defeat against the Illyrians.

Two routes to expansion Although often regarded as a ‘bit of a brawler’ Philip was politically astute. He used marriages to secure his rule and to pacify other tribes/ cities. Philip numerous wives

Marriage and diplomacy On your maps (either) Mark on Philips Marriages (on the appropriate city/ location). Include a key!

The Marriages Married the Illyrian princess Audata, thus sealing an alliance with the Illyrians. Married Phila, the princess of the Macedonian region of Elimea, which strengthened Macedonian unity. 357 BC he married princess Olympias (Alexander's Mother) from the neighbouring country of Epirus.

If diplomacy fails… Marriage and diplomacy were only one way Philip expanded Macedonia’s influence across Greece. The other way was through war. Typical Ancient History- Swords, sex and Spears!

Task: Philips Campaigns Read the information On your sheets draw on Philips campaigns. Add events to the time line.

Assessing his campaigns Can we give evidence for the following: Philip was ambitious Philip was a great leader Philip was ruthless Philip was cunning

The League of Corinth In 337 BC Philip marched his army to Corinth. He met with representatives from the major Greek states. They formed a new structure for governing Greece.

The League: There was a council called Synedrion where all member states were represented. All states were guaranteed their independence and legal structures. All armies of Greece were put under the command on one Hegemon (Philip). Philip used this position to declare war on Persia. How far was the league of Corinth a result of Greece wanting to settle a score with Persia OR Greek states bowing to the will and ambitions of Philip?
