Answering Source Questions

How Useful? A good response would be to locate the source in history by considering the following questions “Why was it that person saying it?” “Why did it matter?” “Why then and in that way?” “Was it the same as previous or later views?”

Provenance It is answers to these sorts of questions which help establish the source’s usefulness. This is called Provenance. You can earn up to 3 marks for this.

Interpretation You can earn 2 marks for establishing the view of the source. The view of the source is…. Optimistic / pessimistic about Critical/ favourable of Taking a line which emphasises We can say this because the source comments that…… This is called interpretation.

Wider Contextual Detail You can then earn up to 7 marks for the quality and depth of the recall you provide to help you evaluate the source’s useful ness. Continue your answer: The reasons why this view is held are because….. (This is where you add recall) Appropriate quotes from Historians will also earn marks.

The 2 source Question This question is asking you to consider the views or view points or interpretations of the two sources. It is not a direct comparison You need to interpret the views of both and consider what other views are held. You need to verify the views with evidence.

Planning your answer The view of the source is…. Optimistic / pessimistic about Critical/ favourable of Taking a line which emphasises We can say this because the source comments that…… The reasons why this view is held are because….. (This is where you add recall)

Other views The question requires you to consider the views in the sources as a perspective of an issue. This means that you must be able to show that other views it may be possible to hold Give additional factual evidence which supports a different interpretation Give additional information on differing schools of thought that historians ascribe to which diverge from the views in the two sources Refer to different historians by name or quotes whose views either support or diverge from the sources

Conclusion It can be seen therefore that the sources do shed light as perspectives on x because…… Never the less we see how valid other views are like. NB a good answer without any reference to historians would not be able to achieve more than 12 out of 16
