E-portfolios in action. Designing, developing and evaluating an e-portfolio system; reflecting upon the affordances for trainee teachers. Dr John Woollard November 2008

2/19 In the beginning In 2001, before the term e-portfolio was common parlance there was a perceived need to enable teachers in training to save, store, present and archive their electronically- based work so that it could be assessed by tutors.

3/19 In the beginning

4/19 In the beginning The principles underpinning the original and developing features of the system can be summarised in this single phrase: protected, easy, open, secure and free access to locally stored folders In 2001 EPS looked like this…

5/19 On the worldwide web… What does this mean? http://www.pgce.soton.ac.uk/EPS/joe.bloggs http://www.pgce.soton.ac.uk/EPS/joe.bloggs/mywork.doc http://www.pgce.soton.ac.uk/EPS/joe.bloggs http://www.pgce.soton.ac.uk/EPS/joe.bloggs/mywork.doc

6/19 The principles guiding the design… protected, easy, open, secure and free access to locally stored folders

7/19 Simple URL http://www.pgce.soton.ac.uk/eps

8/19 Web view

9/19 Manage view

10/19 Secure 1.Fairly and lawfully processed. 2.Processed for limited purposes. 3.Adequate, relevant and not excessive. 4.Accurate. 5.Not kept longer than necessary. 6.Processed in accordance with the data subject's rights. 7.Secure. 8.Not transferred to countries without adequate protection.

11/19 Password protection

12/19 Applying for an account

13/19 Confirming the account

14/19 Confirming the account

15/19 3 clicks

16/19 Daily report for the tutor

17/19 Features Exposure to the generic features of e-portfolios: a container for the resources; a location for the container; a means of seeing the contents; a means of adding contents; a means of changing or even deleting contents; a means of sharing; a means of monitoring; a method of registration; a method of protection (username and password); a method of securing (backup).

18/19 What are the affordances of EPS identified by tutors using the system? learn about and experience the secure, monitored, flexible and efficient building and sharing of electronic resources. Affordances

19/19 Discussion
