Year 1 – Challenges? What do you think are the challenges faced by new Year 1 students @ MMU? -No friends -Miss home -Live at home … so have less chance to socialise -Never cooked for themselves -Used to very structured learning (i.e. homework) - Used to constant feedback & checks on progress - Not used to learning independently - Party too much → Miss lectures / labs / assessments

Year 1 – Challenges? What do you think stops some students from: - reaching full potential in Year 1 … or even leaving the university? -All of previous slide + Leave it too late to deal with problems + Don’t know who to ask for help + Don’t work hard enough + Do work hard … but need extra support

Years 2 & 3 – Challenges? What additional challenges do Year 2 & 3 students face? -All of previous slides + Bad habits from Year 1 (…not getting up early enough etc.) + Topics / Assessments are harder + Worried about results + Start thinking about the future

Ultimate Aim Every MMU Student: Has the confidence, knowledge & ability …to rise to the challenge of any problem Has a thirst for knowledge (not just wanting to learn stuff to pass exams) Graduates with a 1 st Has a well-rounded portfolio of extra-curricular activities (MMU Futures!) Gets a fantastic job Makes friends for life

Mentors You have all survived at least 1 year @ MMU … so you already know that … University →Big change from school / college / job Your experience: …no mentor …terrible mentor …fantastic mentor Differing Expectations: - MentorvsMenteevsUniversity Different subjects … different availability … different requirements So what do you think a mentor should do?

Student Guide to Mentoring: Key Questions Aim: Make a list of suggestions for each of the following topics Present ideas to everyone Lists will be collected & assembled into a “Student Guide to Mentoring” Key Questions: 1.What do you think a student expects from a Mentor? 2.What do you think a Mentor should do – 1 st time meeting? 3.What do you think a Mentor should do in general 4.What do you think a Mentor should NOT do? 5.How often should you meet / contact your mentees? 6.What topics do you think a mentor should discuss? 7.What events / activities should a mentor organise? 8.Any examples of “good mentoring” from your own experience … not mentioned above.
