Broad General Education (BGE) 3-15 –planned using CfE experiences and outcomes Early level pre-school to P1 first level P2 to P4 second levelP5 to P7 third & fourth level S1 to S3 Fewer experiences and outcomes within broader levels –Reduces clutter –Gives ‘space’ to broaden and deepen learning – so challenges and stretches all learners to develop a more secure understanding –Avoids superficial (short-term) learning and overly rapid (insecure) progress Senior Phase S4-6 –planned using SQA and other qualification arrangements Literacy, Numeracy and aspects of Health and Wellbeing now responsibility of all teachers More active involvement in learning –Greater ownership and responsibility for all learners to contribute to planning, undertaking & evaluating their learning –More diverse approaches - including collaborative / cooperative learning Education Service

Next steps All schools have three year plans for CfE (11/12 – 13/14) In 2011/12, focus on: –Planning and tracking learning (OTwL) –Rolling out S2 broad general education –Developing S3 broad general education for (2012/13) –Continuing to develop confidence and expertise in assessment and moderation –Raising awareness of draft documents are released by SQA and offering feedback to help shape new national qualifications –Profiling learning (notably for S3 by 2012/13) –Continuing to support active learning (Co-op; MIE; FSIN) –Extending systematic planning of transferable skills across all schools –Increasing confidence and effectiveness in Literacy / Numeracy / Health and Wellbeing as responsibility of all –Finalising curriculum guidelines for 2013/14 and beyond –Informing and engaging parents Education Service
