3 “Hating your job is grim. It can make you physically ill. A huge amount of absence from work is attributed to stress. An experienced and, until then, successful manager told me recently that he had been to see his doctor because he could no longer eat, sleep or think straight. Whenever he heard his manager’s voice he felt physically sick. Indeed, when telling his doctor about this he burst into tears. A stressful job with an over-controlling boss had reduced him to total misery and an inability to function.” (Cameron, 2009: 14)

The difference between these two extremes is so important that it is worth making every effort to take the challenge posed ……………… and do everything you can now to ensure that your working experience is positive. 10 In your ALS (online discussion forum), discuss the following questions and agree a common list: 1.What most surprised you on starting work with your host employer? 2.What are the most common difficulties you encounter at work? 3.What are the most common frustrations? 4.What was the most satisfying? 5.If you now choose a job, how must it be different to your placement job? 6.What would be the ideal characteristics for someone to have working in you host organisation? **** Get group leader in your ALS to upload this on to the module web!!

13 Finding opportunities… 1.In your groups, make a shortlist of where you could possibly search for opportunities 2.Go to computer and let every group member explore a different possibility 3.Reconvene and let group leader upload member contributions to module web For portfolio
