Cooperative Learning Curriculum for Excellence & Cooperative Learning = Perfect Pals! The Mathematical Association Conference Saturday 18th September 2010 Monica Kirson, Maths Teacher Our Lady’s High School, Cumbernauld, NL

Cooperative Learning Agenda ActivitiesMaths Content Show-Me Boards- Different Questioning Techniques Stand & Deliver- Prepare to Answer Questions Pairs Compare & Say-it Write-it Post-it - Team & Peer Assessment Clock Partners- Choosing Random Partners Teacher/Student- Challenging Others, Mathematically

Cooperative Learning Positive Interdependence = you cannot complete task alone Individual Accountability = you have to learn the task Face to Face Interaction = discuss/work close together Social Skills = the behaviour expectations Group Processing = assessing your contribution & understanding 5 Basic Elements - cooperative learning structure

Cooperative Learning Goal Reward Resource Role Sequence Simulation Outside Force Environment Identity "More brains are better than one brain" Positive Interdependence ✔ ✔ ✔ ✔ ✔

Cooperative Learning Round Robin Share (Team-Building Activity) Social Skill : Listening Attentively to Your Partner Starting with the person with the most letters in their name, share : Your Name Your School and Role Your Favourite Film (or Book)

Cooperative Learning Agenda ActivitiesMaths Content Show-Me Boards- Different Questioning Techniques Stand & Deliver- Prepare to Answer Questions Pairs Compare & Say-it Write-it Post-it - Team & Peer Assessment Clock Partners- Choosing Random Partners Teacher/Student- Challenging Others, Mathematically

Cooperative Learning Activity 1 “Think Pair Share” Academic Task : I Can Practice Mental & Non- Calculator Questions Social Skills :To Use Quiet Voices To Reach Consensus

Cooperative Learning Activity 1 “Think Pair Share” Everyone Works In “Pairs or Trios” : Teacher reads out each question twice Person 1 writes down their answer to the question Person 2 writes down their answer if different Quietly, pupils agree on the correct answer On the teacher’s signal all teams show their answer To encourage correct responses could give 2 nd chance Now person 2 is first to write their answer (& so on)

Cooperative Learning Activity 1 “Think Pair Share” Draw a 2D composite shape with 2 lines of symmetry? Write down a “2 stage” calculation with the answer 18? OR

1.Cooperative Learning Activity 1 “Think Pair Share” “An Even Function is symmetrical about the y-axis” Draw a sketch of an even function Clue : Trig Graph, Quadratic, Adv Higher Functions!!!!!

Cooperative Learning Activity 1 “Think Pair Share” Clue : Think of Pythagorean Triples! Explain why 5 Km is needed to calculate the perimeter of this triangular enclosure Answer = 6 + 5 + 5 = 16 Km

Cooperative Learning Activity 1 “Think Pair Share” Is the derivative of sin (x) equal to cos (x) or - cos (x) ? Is the answer to -3 + (-4) equal to 1 or (-7) ? OR

1.Cooperative Learning Activity 1 “Think Pair Share” What is the gradient of the tangent to the curve, y = x 2 + 2x – 4, at x = 3 A. 6 B. 11 C. 8 D. 4 Answer = 2 x 3 + 2 = 8, C. Clue : gradient = m = dy / dx

Cooperative Learning Agenda ActivitiesMaths Content Show-Me Boards- Different Questioning Techniques Stand & Deliver- Prepare to Answer Questions Pairs Compare & Say-it Write-it Post-it - Team & Peer Assessment Clock Partners- Choosing Random Partners Teacher/Student- Challenging Others, Mathematically

Cooperative Learning Activity 2 - “Stand and Deliver” Academic Task : I Can Choose The Correct Number To Multiply Each Equation By So That All The Fractions Disappear Social Skills :To Take Turns & To Support Each Other

Cooperative Learning Activity 2 - “Stand and Deliver” (Explanation) Team members all stand and take turns choosing the correct number to multiply by When all team members are confident with the task, then all members can sit back down Sitting down indicates to the teacher that all members have achieved the task The teacher can now call upon any member of any team to share what they have learned with the whole class

Cooperative Learning Agenda ActivitiesMaths Content Show-Me Boards- Different Questioning Techniques Stand & Deliver- Prepare to Answer Questions Pairs Compare & Say-it Write-it Post-it - Team & Peer Assessment Clock Partners- Choosing Random Partners Teacher/Student- Challenging Others, Mathematically

Cooperative Learning Activity 3 “Pairs Compare” & “Say-it Write-it Post-it” Academic Task : I Can Work With My Partner To Solve Each Question I Can Share My Ideas Social Skills :To Reach Consensus To Check For Understanding

Cooperative Learning Work with your Partner to solve the first equation Share your solution with another Pair (as instructed) As a Team of 4, agree on the best solution Write down the best solution in your jotter (amend or change your present solution) Take turns to post your agreed solution (as instructed) Take turns to compare your solutions with others Activity 3 “Pairs Compare” & “Say-it Write-it Post-it”

Cooperative Learning Agenda ActivitiesMaths Content Show-Me Boards- Different Questioning Techniques Stand & Deliver- Prepare to Answer Questions Pairs Compare & Say-it Write-it Post-it - Team & Peer Assessment Set-A-Date- Choosing Random Partners Teacher/Student- Challenging Others, Mathematically

Cooperative Learning Activity 4 : “Set-A-Date” Academic Task : I Can Exchange Clock Dates With Two Different People Social Skills :To Use Good Meeting & Greeting Skills

Cooperative Learning Activity 4 : “Set-A-Date” Take your “Set-A-Date” sheet and exchange a date with TWO different people (find dates for 6 & 12 o’clock) On meeting each person, share your Name and your Favourite Colour To Wear Now return to your seat

Cooperative Learning Activity 4 : “Set-A-Date” Take your “Set-A-Date” sheet and exchange a date with TWO different people (find dates for 3 & 9 o’clock) On meeting each person, share your Name and your Favourite Colour To Wear Now return to your seat

Cooperative Learning Agenda ActivitiesMaths Content Show-Me Boards- Different Questioning Techniques Stand & Deliver- Prepare to Answer Questions Pairs Compare & Say-it Write-it Post-it - Team & Peer Assessment Clock Partners- Choosing Random Partners Teacher/Student- Challenging Others, Mathematically

Cooperative Learning Activity 5 : “Teacher/Student” Academic Task : I Can Design A Question I Can Write Out The Solution (in jotter) I Can Exchange Questions I Can Solve My Partner’s Question I Can Check My Partner’s Solution To My Question Social Skills :To Support Each Other To Give Helpful Feedback

Cooperative Learning Activity 5 : “Teacher/Student” On your “teacher/student” blank sheet, you are going to design a question for your student Teachers: Present helpful diagrams, pictures, hints… Students: Responses could include calculations, explanations, sentences, diagrams, tables, pictures…

Cooperative Learning Activity 5 : “Teacher/Student” example

Cooperative Learning Activity 5 : “Paired Reading” Teachers: Design your question for your partner Solve your question in your jotter Exchange Questions with your partner Students: Solve your partner’s question (give support as needed) Exchange Solutions with your partner Teachers: Check your partner’s solution Discuss/Agree any changes needed Return solutions with Helpful Feedback!

Cooperative Learning Thank you for your time and attention Please thank your partner for supporting your learning today Thank You
