Why? Simple, at the time no one was thinking about video collections.

Hardware Overview 2 x HP DL380 G3’s running MS Server 2003 1 x Mac + EyeTV Software + Tuner 1 x PC running MS XP & Expression Encoder 1 x Osprey Video Capture Card 1 x VCR/DVD Player Freeview Box

Server Setup Configuration Servers running a DFS MS Windows Media Streaming Services NLB’d

TV Feed and Recordings iMac Elgato DTT Tuner In my experience this has proven stable and reliable in comparison with other setups

Encoder Originally Windows Media Encoder (free) Now MS Expression Encoder(costs a small amount but can give SilverLight output, chaptering, overlays etc)

Transmission Mostly Unicast Tested 100+ unicast streams. Multicast streams also viable, but no end user control in setup. Wrapper (doesn’t work well on a Mac)

Live TV Weeks of telephone calls and emails. Don’t get me started about the TV Licensing company. Ofcom finally confirms its ok

Live TV Freeview box connect to my VCR, VCR connected to my Osprey card, Osprey Card connected to my elbow..... Expression Encoder captures and re-encodes the stream sending it to the Windows Media Streaming server
