Computer Games Digital Games Design Level 5
2
Three Outcomes Demonstrate understanding of – different digital gaming platforms and related technologies – planning and design elements within the production of a digital game Plan and design a level in a digital game to a given brief
3
Understanding gaming Platforms Describe – different platforms Consoles, mobile devices different hardware specifications – processors, memory, graphics configurations & support, wired & wireless, storage capabilities & options
4
Understanding Gaming Platforms – Different gaming genres sports, arcade, fantasy, adventure, shoot ‘em ups, adventure, war, historical, puzzle – Factors influencing effectiveness of environments use of lighting and shadows, textures used to add realism to objects – E.g. buildings, surroundings and characters
5
OC1 Assessment Report – Written in class under closed book conditions – Describe three different Gaming Platforms (including hardware specs) Gaming genres Gaming environments May be overlap with other Games Design unit – This one requires more description/depth
6
Understanding Planning and Design Describe – key components of planning – Design components …used in development of a digital game
7
Topics covered Elements of a game development plan Importance of identifying target audience – their expectation of the game – how this will influence look, feel and game play Importance of identifying types of game play for the production. – individual or multiple interactions with the gaming environment.
8
Topics Covered continued Importance of identifying type of genre – (e.g. sports, arcade, fantasy, adventure, first person shooter, adventure, war, historical, puzzle) Suitability of environmental choices – (eg use of lighting and shadows, textures to add realism to objects) – effects these have on game play
9
More Topics Covered! Pivotal role of characters within the production – their effect or (lack of effect) on the user experience Importance of the central theme of the production, – is it a quest, a tale of vengeance, sports, mythology, etc.
10
Even More Topics Covered Audio, narration & in the game play. – If used properly can give a more realistic feel to game, draw user in and provide a more rewarding game play experience Importance of a visual style that reflects the central theme of the production Importance of concept art. – helps to set the look and feel of the production
11
Finally Importance of storyboarding – should be used to provide an interpretation of what will eventually be put into production – include details of what is happening within the production at any given time E.g. character interactions, movements, tasks to be achieved, narration, audio, interactivity options, etc. Importance of scripting – can help to provide a more rewarding game
12
OC2 Assessment Report – Written in class under closed book conditions Describe the role of: – target audiences – game play – genre – environments – characters – the choice of themes – audio – narration – visual style – concept art, storyboarding and scripting – (twelve items)
13
Plan & Design a Game Level Work to a given brief Plan key components Use design techniques to interpret the plan
14
OC3 Assessment Create Plan & Designs covering – target audience, game play, genre – Environment, characters, choice of theme – Audio, narration, visual style – concept art, storyboarding and scripting..to suit the given brief
