The Jew said, “Let’s go to Muhammad for judgment,” since he knew that he would not take bribes. The hypocrite said, “Let’s go to the Jews for judgment,” since he knew they took bribes. So they agreed to go to a fortune-teller from the Juhaynah tribe for judgment, and then the Verse, ( Have you not seen those who claim… ) was sent down.”

One of them said, “Let’s go to the Prophet (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace),” and the other said, “Rather, to Ka’b ibn al-Ashraf.” They took their dispute to ‘Umar, and one of them told him the story. He asked the one who was not pleased with (going to) the Messenger of Allaah (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace), “Was it really like that?” He said, “Yes.” So ‘Umar struck him with his sword and killed him.
