Local community service takes many forms that are appropriate to the area. Local service is club initiated, led, and implemented as local service projects. These projects help to improve the quality of life in communities in which Rotarians live and raise their families. They also help to promote the ideals of Rotary within the local community.

Just as local service is a fundamental ideal of Rotary, so too is International service. International community service is critical to fulfilling the wider mission of Rotary. International service projects can be club, District, or RI initiated. International service ranges from small but meaningful gestures like hosting a GSE team member to large scale, long term initiatives like Polio Plus. The Rotary Foundation is central to International Service.

RI is the largest and most global service organization in the world
How is Rotary International Organized?
Rotarians join and are members of local Rotary Clubs. As such they agree to abide by the club constitution and bylaw, the Rotary 4-way test, and the Object of Rotary.
Rotary Clubs are chartered and are part of Rotary International under a set of common by-laws and a common constitution. To become a Rotary club, the club has to "join" (be chartered by) Rotary International.
Rotary International has over 30,000 clubs in over 160 different countries as members. It is the largest and most global service organization in the world.

All large organizations with the scope, breadth, and diversity of Rotary International need organization and leaders at all levels to fulfill it's mission successfully.
To accomplish this, RI has organized its member clubs into zones and districts which are manageable size organizations, each with their own elected and appointed representatives.
Rotary International is organized into 34 zones and 452 Districts worldwide. Arizona, along with 13 adjoining states is in zone 25. There are three Districts in Arizona, including ours, district 5490, which has 40 clubs under its umbrella.

How is the District Organized?
The District is organized much like a Rotary Club, with a Governor, a Secretary, a Treasurer, chairs from the 4 areas of service, and committees for the RI Foundation, Youth Services, Special Projects and others, just like a club.

14. Who is "The District"? Who Picks the District Staff?
A District nominating committee selects the District Governor from nominations made by Clubs
The DG selects a team of volunteers from a variety of clubs to assist him in building the bridge
Who Picks the District Staff?
The clubs nominate candidates for the District Governor position. The District nominating committee makes the final selection for District Governor.
The DG then selects a team of volunteers from a variety of clubs to assist him or her in building the bridge in much the same way as a Club President forms their own team.

The district provides coaching.
Most of the district leadership have been club officers and have served their own clubs in a variety of capacities. They hold a wealth of knowledge to share in the form of training and mentoring.
The District is there to help develop new leaders within the club through continual training opportunities such as PETS, the District Leadership Assembly, Membership and Foundation Seminars and more. Training focuses on operational aspects of Rotary, as opposed to philosophical, to help each club be effective as possible.
The district provides mentoring to develop future Rotary leaders for the clubs, the District and Rotary International.

What’s it like to be District Governor?
Your District Governor is a volunteer, just like you! The DG is an officer of Rotary International during the term of office. This is not a paid position.
It is a long-term commitment starting with District Governor Nominee when elected, then DG Elect the year before office, then DG term followed by being a Past District Governor for life! The two years before the DG term are a learning opportunity and a time to better know your clubs and the district.

The DG visits all clubs for an official visit to:
Communicate the message of RI and the District

The DG will try to make other visits to clubs to join in projects, speak about Rotary subjects and assist with special needs and projects.
