3 New Canadians Centre Non-profit agency that supports newcomers to adapt to life in Canada Funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada and donations from community organizations and individuals Offices in Peterborough and Cobourg serve a large geographic area

4 The SWIS Program SWIS serves as a bridge between home and school. SWIS places settlement workers from NCC in elementary and high schools to assist newcomers. SWIS provides services to all newcomers no matter their immigration status. SWIS helps families who are in their first few years in Canada and who have unresolved settlement needs.

5 How Does SWIS Work? By providing information and referral to school and community resources By encouraging families to participate in school life By supporting school staff through information relevant to settlement and integration By travelling to schools that school boards have not identified as home base schools

6 What are Settlement Needs? School orientation Immigration questions Health Housing Community support Employment Language training Transportation Family support

7 School Registration Process Principal provides consent to release information form. –Original copy is sent to SWIS at the home base school. –A photocopy is kept in a school file. SWIS calls the family to make an appointment to meet them and to discuss their needs. SWIS provides information and referrals as needed. SWIS monitors newcomer families throughout the year.
