3 Ministry of Energy & Mines Ressources naturelles Canada Natural Resources Canada Bowser and Sustut Basins Part of BC Ministry of Energy and Mines strategy to evaluate and develop Intermontane basins of BC New Energy Program Section of the New Ventures Branch is entrusted with hydrocarbon assessment of sedimentary basins in BC Working cooperatively with Geological Survey of Canada Fernie Bowser Whitehorse Western Canada Sedimentary Basin Nechako Quesnel Georgia

4 Ministry of Energy & Mines Ressources naturelles Canada Natural Resources Canada Bowser – Sustut Basins Covers a large area >65,000 km 2 In excess of 7000 metres of Jurassic and Cretaceous sediments Terrace Smithers Bear Lake Stewart 100 km Thermal maturation of sediments is lower than original estimates

5 Ministry of Energy & Mines Ressources naturelles Canada Natural Resources Canada Old Ideas Prior to 2002, Bowser Basin rocks were believed to be mature to overmature This was based on limited surface thermal maturation data in Klappan-Groundhog coal fields This data was extrapolated across the entire basin Terrace Smithers Bear Lake Stewart 100 km

6 Ministry of Energy & Mines Ressources naturelles Canada Natural Resources Canada New Realities New surface thermal maturation data indicates that large portions of the Bowser and Sustut basins are in the oil and/or gas windows Oil staining on surface and downhole samples indicates several petroleum systems Supported by missed gas pay in one well
