A few reminders about theme It is NOT directly stated in the text It is NOT the same thing as plot It is NOT the conflict It is NOT expressed in a single word, in the text It is the central, underlying and controlling idea of a work of literature

Theme often… Shows us how we can make our lives better and deal with a problem It is the idea the writer wishes to convey about the subject The writer’s view of the world or a revelation about human nature It could be true for all people

Read “The Interlopers” by Saki in groups of four Pause at the end of each page to compare notes As you read, underline/highlight Any words that tickle your fancy!

The Interlopers What is an interloper? Definition: A person who becomes involved in a place or situation where they are not wanted or are considered not to belong.

Turn each of the following morals into themes Treat others as you wish to be treated. It’s what’s on the inside that counts. Love conquers all.
