Primary Care Based Integrated Cancer Screening Initiative A Nursing Student Pilot Project Increase screening rates for breast, cervical, colorectal cancers in partnership with Primary Care Practitioners and provide a new placement opportunity for 4 th year nursing students Objective

The Evidence 2  One-on-one primary care based interventions lead to a greater uptake in cancer screening Pilot Concept  4th Year student nurses placed within primary care offices with a focus on cancer screening & prevention  10 students from Sept ‘13- Apr ’14 within 3 PCP offices & 1 FHT Student Role within PCP: Utilizing TPSR+SARS to identify eligible patients Targeted interventions: face to face for scheduled patients & telephone interventions for non scheduled patients Cancer screening education and facilitation of appointments & tests Patient follow up completed at timed intervals

Research Component  To study behavioral and social determinants that impact cancer screening U of Windsor REB approval Consent cards developed to collect patient consent from patients willing to participate - Phone consent and in-person consent -Consent collected by Student RN during intervention Consenting patients are contacted by the research assistant to gather relevant information 3

Outcomes  Summer time – data clean up and follow up on tests, appointments etc  Ongoing: analysis of post clean-up data 4 CRCBreastCervical FOBT Kits148Mammos Booked89Appts booked155 Assessment Appts43Pink slips68Pap tests completed 25 Pt. 5 Outcomes & Data limitations  SAR and TPSR lists were used to create a workable excel database to determine baseline screening rates and for tracking of the screening interventions  The results presented are very basic based on interventions  Increases in the screening rates are attributable to: I.The actual screening intervention and resulting completion of the appropriate tests II.Any updates to the database as the students worked through it (i.e. removing inactive patients, adding new rostered patients etc.) 5

Next Steps 6 Continue pilot for another year and establish a sustainability plan going forward Quantitative data collection with continue for the next year New SAR reports available as of April 28 th will be used going forward Control groups will be included in data analysis next year
