1 Obedience to Authority

2 Obedience to authority: Lecture objectives
Visit the original Milgram experiment and a recent replication conducted at Santa Clara University.

3 What to look out for: In video: In book: Basic procedures
How obedience is rationalized (especially in SCU) Influence processes In book: Why do people obey according to Milgram? Identify the variations (experiments) of Milgram and how that impacts obedience rates. These two goals allow one to make applications (increase or decrease obedience) since one knows the why and when of obedience to authority.

4 Obedience replication comparisons
Milgram and Burger (45 years later) produced nearly the same results; (so did the Pratkanis replication of Asch 50 years later) Exception: Burger did not show lower rates when a dissenting confederate was included. Some differences: Burger’s confederate said, “I can’t do it.” Milgram used two confederates who said: “Not participating because the learner was complaining.” “Not willing to shock that man against his will.”

5 Obedience to authority experiments
Show Stanford prison experiment video Show Burger replications parts 1 & 2
