Guideline for discussion/presentation/critique #1: Really understand the paper …
2
discussion/presentation/critique to summarize the important message delivered in the article (half to one page in the critique). discuss the theoretical implications, their relation to the broader literature & potential limitation of the approach/conclusion.
3
The summary a. INTRO: the research issues addressed in the article b. METHOD: the experimental method and hypothesis c. RESULTS: the empirical findings of the paper that support the hypothesis and/or theoretical conclusions d. DISCUSISON: & interpretation
4
Commentary: FRAMEWORK to consider … Introduction/discussion rationale, theoretical insight Method General approach Exp Design Manipulation used Validity & reliability Results data analysis Strength of results Generalization of conclusion
5
Commentary The critical analysis could include (but not be limited to) some of the following: a. Methodological issues i. whether the data presented supports the authors' claims as stated in the article. ii. some factors that were not controlled in a study or other ways in which it was incomplete.
6
Neuropsychology – lesion, brain damage neurology psychology – Behavoural measure, functional imaging Neurobiology – structure, chemistry Neurophysiology – cellular activity, EEG General neuroscience approaches
7
b. Results/Conclusions i. further analysis of the data already collected that could tell us something more ii. logical alternatives to the authors' explanations of their results iii. additional predictions or experiments that could come out of the conclusions iv. related issues that could be studied by similar approaches v. relevance to theories and phenomena not discussed by the authors vi. possible next steps for the research program
8
c. Relevance to other studies - relating the results to other findings in the literature i. Way to search relevant literature 1. Review articles, Introduction and Discussion of empirical articles 2. Use web resource such as researchers’ web pages, goggle etc. 3. Using Science Citation Index from Web of Science to search papers that cited the target article
9
ii. Relating the study to the greater theoretical context: how the findings of this paper extend our knowledge of this area of research (why is this study important and interesting)? why this study has limitations.
10
Presentation Summary group FORMAT: Simplify for the audience – Use some teaching materials, e.g., anatomical figures, flow chats, tables – Rationale of the exp Key hypotheses – Summary of the evidence – Summary of the interpretation
11
Commentary groups Organize your materials to present a coherent stream of ideas Summary of your argument Use proper amount of text in the slides Use citation: (Smith, 2000, Science)
12
Use the same computer for both summary and commentary presentations Do not change file right before presentation
13
Group Discussion Part I: Four carefully structured sentences Intro, method, results, conclusion Part II: commentary A few issues, novelty of the finding challenge in the exp …
