I. Community Organizations: Types Government agencies or departments (federal, provincial, or municipal), e.g. Canadian International Development Agency International organizations, e.g. World Health Organization Non-government organizations or non-profit organizations, Local, e.g. VIDEA National, e.g. Results Canada International, e.g. Oxfam Canada Overseas, e.g. Equality for Growth, Women for Change

Know your community partners What are its mission and goals? What are the nature of the organization and its structure? What are the projects and services provided ? Do they provide the services directly or through another organization? Who are some of the key people who are running the organization? Who is the main contact person for the project that you are involved? Provide services in overseas location Overseas partner Local community partner Students

What community partners can gain? Gain input and expertise from students and faculty to fulfill their missions A cost-effective way to promote the work of community organizations Bring a diversity of perspectives into their organizations with greater capacities to serve their constituents

Working with Community Organizations: Benefits to Students Create positive social change in the community Energize, enhance, and make real the course curricula Growth in abilities to communicate with diverse audiences Enhancement of leadership and project management skills Develop capacities for work with others Clarify career goals and provide a network of contacts Become an informed and involved participant in communities and world (Cress, et. Al. 2005, p. 17)

Student Responsibilities Understand your own role and expectations of community partners Familiar with the missions, goals, and organization structure of the community partner Adhere to all College policies and student conduct policies Avoid any risk or potential risk to yourselves or others Communicate clearly with community partners on time management and commitments Conduct your work in small group (Reitenauer, et. al., 2005)

Student Rights A safe environment that supports your service learning activities free from any threats, such as sexual or other forms of harassment or discrimination
