Get to Know Your H2O If You Live in the US.....
You MIGHT be a Water Hog! Get to Know Your H2O
2
Water is Essential to Life on Earth
We have the same water that was here 65 millions years ago. Water is in a continous cycle. There is no such thing as "new" water.
3
Earth’s water is mostly salt water (97. 5%). The remaining 2
Earth’s water is mostly salt water (97.5%). The remaining 2.5% is fresh water, and most of the fresh water is frozen. Did you know that LESS than 1% of our water supply is readily available for use?
4
Water can be a: Gas Liquid Solid
5
In the US, 80-90% of our fresh water supply comes from groundwater
Liquid Water Temperature and air pressure determine when water is liquid. It cannot be too cold or too hot to remain a liquid and the air pressure must be relatively low. 97.5% of Earth's Water is Ocean Water Lakes Rivers In the US, 80-90% of our fresh water supply comes from groundwater
6
Gaseous Water You see water in the form of gas, when you see…….. Clouds Geysers Steam Fog Water changes from liquid to gas when its heated. This gas is called water vapor. Although we can’t see it, water vapor is all around us. We even release water vapor into the air when we breath, and it’s also transpired from plants.
7
Solid Water Ice Frost Glaciers Polar Ice Caps Solid: When water becomes very cold it freezes and changes from liquid to solid. Frozen water has a definite form and shape.
8
NOW THAT’S ONE BIG ICEBERG!
9
The Amazing Water Cycle
10
Evaporation When liquid water heats up it becomes vaporized and
changes into a gas Water vapor rises due to a difference in air pressure As water vapor rises it becomes cooler; the higher it rises the faster it condenses Seawater evaporation ponds, on the Isle of Rhé off the coast of France, are used to obtain salt
11
Condensation Water vapor condenses to liquid water under warm conditions In cold temperatures water vapor condenses to ice
