An example of an unboring Powerpoint presentation. (when presented properly anyway) By Daniel Tang

Introduction Introduce what you’ll be talking about. I’ll be talking about techniques to improve your Powerpoint

KISS Keep it simple stupid! Key data only Don’t put a whole essay on one slide Keep it minimal! If presenting a graph or picture, annotate it and orally explain it.

Example of presenting a picture Interesting picture LOL Nice font Proper way to present a picture

Present, don’t read You are presenting the actual information The Powerpoint is just helping the audience remember some of your points. Come prepared with cue cards Glance every now and then if you lose track Again, only key data on slides Also make sure to add humor

Layout and Look No scribbly motion path animations Contrasting colors Be consistent Use appropriate fonts

No scribbly motion path animations Don’t make reader chase your text Don’t do it at all.

Contrasting colors Make sure audience can read clearly Black on White Yellow on Black-Dark Blue gradient

Consistency Keep layout and color scheme consistent throughout presentation.

Organize Organize your points into categories. Have a page for each category. If it can’t fit in a single page without making your font smaller, separate into further categories

Fonts Use two fonts (or just keep both same) One for titles One for text Use bold and italics sparingly

Fonts – ones to use Times New Roman Arial Helvetica Calibri

Fonts – ones to avoid Comic Sans MS Joined handwriting fonts Block fonts 

Fonts – Don’t ever do this Hi, I’m so unreadable you have to squint to read me!

Conclusion Always have a conclusion that recovers what you’ve been discussing.
