Cause of skin cancer Main cause of skin cancer is over-exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays UV rays * Invisible * Most intense at middle of day * Can burn when cloudy * Same effect all year Not to be confused with Infra-Red and Solar rays UV Rays # Have nothing to do with temperature so is not warm. # Come from the same sun so effective all year. # Not reflected by clouds so still occurs on overcast days. Infra-Red & Solar Rays Creates light & heat. Have seasonal temperature changes. Reflected by clouds Refer to drawing on the board

High-risk people The following are most at risk of skin cancer People with fair skin who burn easily People with fair or red hair who live in a hot climate People who live in a hot climate like Queensland People who spend a lot of time outdoors (job / play) People with lots of moles People do not protect their skin

Prevention methods – Slip, Slop Slap! Cover up Hat Wide brimmed to cover all parts of head and shoulders Sunglasses To protect eyes from sunburn and damage Clothing Long sleeve shirts / rashies to cover exposed skin

Prevention methods – Slip, Slop Slap! Sunscreen * Use Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 30+ * Apply 30 minutes before going into the sun * Reapply after exercise, swimming or long periods in the sun Shade * Avoid the sun in the middle of the day (10am – 2pm) * Seek shade as often as possible
