The Rights to Englishmen
Back in England Magna Carta (Great Charter) King John – (Story of Robin Hood) King not above the law –in print Property could not be seized by kings No taxed without vote of prominent Could not be put on trial only by official’s word (without witness) Could only be punished by jury of peers Later – elected government officials added

Parliament – model for Colonists government
House of Commons * Elected House of Lords * nonelected, nobles, judges, and clergy King far away – colonists formed their own elected assemblies Parliament granted colonists self government, but kept ultimate authority. Colonists disliked this and the governors appointed to “rule” them.

Increase Mather – Challenges King’s Rule
1600’s – Massachusett’s colonist get caught smuggling – King takes away its charter to rule itself King James appoints Edmund Andros as governor - strict ruler, outlawed assemblies, and limited town meetings Colonists sent Increase Mather to plead with king

James II – restricted rights in colonies and in England Parliament gets mad – goes to James’ daughter and her husband in secret James fears for his life -- loosing support he flee’s England Glorious Revolution

Freedom of the Press 1735 John Peter Zenger: New Your Weekly Journal Stood trial for criticizing New York’s Governor “ A governor turns rogue, does a thousand things for which a small rogue would have deserved a halter, and because it is difficult…to obtain relief against him, … it is prudent to … join the roguery” Andrew Hamilton defended Zenger in court: People had the right to speak the truth
