2
QUICK ADMIN STUFF Our first SAC will be on the Wednesday of week 3 (1 August). General HRM and Motivational Theories will be covered (first page of checklist). Take home practise SAC next Friday (27 July) Next Tuesday I am away at a PD. I will set some readings and exercises (if you don’t do them that SAC the week after will be real tricky) I still need to see holiday homework from Jake, Cass and Alexis.

LEARNING INTENTIONS Students will be able to: Identify employer & employee expectations of employment Describe why sometimes these expectations can be in conflict Identify & discuss practices that employers can implement to meet employee expectations
4
Formal and informal beliefs about the tasks or working environment that an employer provides. Some expectations an employee may have are: 1. Safe and clean working environment that complies with OH&S law 2. Job security 3. Remuneration (reasonable pay) 4. Professional development opportunities 5. Work/life balance EMPLOYEE EXPECTATIONS
5
For each of these expectations we need to ask three questions: 1.Why is it important to employees? 2.Do any laws cover this expectation? 3.What can an employer do to ensure this expectation is met? Keep these questions in mind as we look through the textbook and at other sources. EMPLOYEE EXPECTATIONS
6
We’ll now explore one of the employee expectations, OH&S, as a class. Using page 154-55 answer these questions: 1.Why is it important to employees? 2.Do any laws cover this expectation? 3.What can an employer do to ensure this expectation is met? OH&S
7
What are the likely OH&S risks faced by those in the following jobs (draw up this list in your books): Scientist Miner Teacher Hairdresser Police Officer Truck Driver OH&S
8
We’ll also explore one of the other employee expectations, job security, as a class. Go to the wiki and open the job security link Using this and the textbook, fill out the same questions for Job Security as we did for OH&S JOB SECURITY IN AUSTRALIA
9
Folks – your turn. For the last three expectations (remuneration, professional development and work/life balance) answer these questions for each: 1.Why is it important to employees? 2.Do any laws cover this expectation? 3.What can an employer do to ensure this expectation is met? EMPLOYEE EXPECTATIONS

Formal expectation outlined in a contract of employment about the tasks or working environment. (Individual managers may have informal expectations) Some expectations an employer may have are: 1. Reasonable tasks are completed 2. Work in a timely and safe manner 3. Work effectively individually and as part of a team 4. Confidentiality EMPLOYER EXPECTATIONS
11
For each of these expectations we need to ask two questions: 1.Why is it important to employers? 2.What can an employer do to ensure this expectation is met? Let’s think about these for each of the employer expectations. Confidentiality – on wiki. EMPLOYER EXPECTATIONS
