Choices, Choices........
4
To satisfy the requirements of the Preliminary HSC you will need: 12 units in total (usually 6 courses). You must have an English course. You must have 2 other Board Developed Courses (With an HSC examination).
5
English Standard (2 unit) PD/H/PE (2 Unit) Business Studies (2 unit) General Mathematics (2 Unit) Senior Science (2 Unit) Food Technology (2 unit) 12 Units in total Complications start with extension courses
6
The HSC was designed over 40 years ago with the sole purpose of preparing students for university study. Self-discipline, organisation, persistence, resilience and hard-work are still the keys to success.
7
Band 6: mark above 90% in a course Band 5: mark above 80% in a course Band 4: mark above 70% in a course Band 3: mark above 60% in a course Band 2: mark above 50% in a course Band 1: mark below 50% The number of band 6 and band 5 results varies greatly between courses. Your mark is an average of school assessment and examination mark.
8
The measure used by universities for entry to courses. Normally reflects the demand for the course- high demand usually means high ATAR Ranges from 0 to 99.95 Strict rules for course selection-10 units of Board Developed Courses.
9
Some courses attract a high standard of candidates every year. The universities “weight” these courses more heavily. The most heavily “weighted” courses are Extension 1 and 2 Mathematics, Advanced and Extension 1 and 2 English, Physics, Chemistry and Economics (2013 UAC Guide).
10
More than 90 ATAR-Usually 2 Band 6 results with strong Band 5 results in most other courses. More than 80 ATAR- Usually a Band 6 result and/or solid Band 5 results in most courses. More than 70 ATAR-1 or 2 Band 5 results with strong Band 4 results in other courses. Average ATAR in NSW is 68.05
11
HSC results that include Band 3 results and lower will lead to a very low ATAR. Example, A student who achieves a Band 4 result, 3 Band 3 results and a Band 2 result will likely receive an ATAR of under 40.

What if most of my choices don’t match the grid? When are my study periods? What do I need to do if I change my mind? Can I change my mind next year?
17
Once decisions are made, a team including Ms Cornish, Mrs Payne and other staff will check your choices. 10L pilot program will continue.
