Towards Zero Focused on cars, not on people People focus = is it safe for vulnerable road users? People are afraid to walk and cycle Many societal and personal benefits in getting people out of cars, into active transport

What can the Road Safety Council do? Legislate a safe passing distance Reduce speed on designated roads Better education for road users

Legislate a safe passing distance Most frequent serious cycle accident is being hit by a car travelling in the same direction Legislated one metre as the minimum passing distance Support the “one metre matters” campaign

Reduce speed on designated roads Hit at 30kmh = alive (Hit at 60kmh = dead) PBN suggests where cyclist should ride Re-focus PBN on trains, schools, shops etc Massive casualty reductions in London with 20 mph zones Make it safe – 08/80 rule

Better education road users Re-test drivers when renewing their licence Drivers who “loose” licence re-enter system as novice drivers Driving causing bodily harm becomes assault

Safe roads for everyone Safe for children, old people, people on gopher cars and people using bicyles Less people killed and seriously injured, less congestion, less obesity, longer and better life, less costs to society

The Road Safety Council has the power to initiate the transition towards a safe passing distance, a network of low-speed roads and more tolerant car drivers. Let’s make it happen!
