Definition: a way of speaking or writing in which you say the opposite of what you really mean in order to make an unkind joke or to show that you are annoyed Synonym: rudeness, sneer Sentence: There was a hint of sarcasm in his voice as he spoke back to me. Example: to mock something someone has said to you

Definition: something that you think is true based on the information that you have Synonym: logical guess Sentence: You’ll have to draw your own inferences from the evidence. Example: decide what you think is true based on something told to you

Definition: to say that something will happen before it happens Synonym: foretell, guess, foresee Sentence: Analysts predict that college costs will continue to rise. Example: It is snowing horribly outside, so you predict that we will have a late start to school.

Definition: a long poem that is written in order to praise a person or thing Synonym: compliment, writing Sentence: The girlfriend wrote an ode to her boyfriend for being so good to her and achieving his dream of going to college. Example: writing a poem to your parents praising them for raising you good

Definition: a way of criticizing someone or something, in which you show his, her, or its faults in a funny way Synonym: jokes, make fun of Sentence: Many comedians perform political satire. Example: saying someone is so stupid that they can’t spell the word stupid
