UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR INSTRUCTION Representation: Give learners a variety of ways to acquire information and knowledge Expression: Tap into a person’s interest, offer appropriate challenges, and motivate students to learn Engagement: Provide learners with alternatives for demonstrating what they know

BENEFITS OF UDL: Makes teaching methods available to all students Helps students identify the way they learn best Makes students feel successful and want to learn Improves teaching when instructors utilize the principles of Universal Design for Learning Students find success in learning

BEFORE E-LEARNING BEGINS… Schedule an in-person meeting with class ‘Buddy up’ students Demonstrate log-on procedures Identify note-taker or closed- captioner Give a hard-copy schedule/calendar of lessons Have students choose a partner to work with throughout the course

UDL STRATEGIES FOR WEBSITES AND COURSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS… Deliver information in multi-sensory ways (visual & auditory) Use a variety of teaching methods when presenting information (links, videos, group assignments, role playing & dialogues,etc.) Provide smaller, chunked sessions for increased attention Use captions on all visuals and graphics Use a variety of color and fonts in your presentation of information

UDL STRATEGIES ON WEBSITES AND COURSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS…continued Choose a variety of simple fonts & colors Create web pages with narrow columns Add font size selector tool to the left of the page Use more than one mode of assessing what students know (test, project, peer assessment.)

MODERATOR TIPS FOR ELLUMINATE… Post lecture material prior to session Make cc, writing tool, and session schedule instructions available early on Repeat (reword) class questions before giving answers Assume the nothing!
