Story in the Rocks By: Tayloranne Kaufmann, Amy Jo Jarboe, Jacob Morgan

Weathering Weathering is when rocks are broken down into smaller pieces. There are two different types of weathering: chemical and physical Chemical weathering is when there is a chemical change inside a rock. Physical weathering is when a rock has physically broken into pieces. http://www.nature.nps.gov/geology/usgsnps/misc/gweaero.html( It had bolded vocab words) http://www.nature.nps.gov/geology/usgsnps/misc/gweaero.html

Erosion Erosion is when rocks have been moved from their original position. Erosion is mainly caused by moving water. Sheet erosion is a type of soil erosion in which rain washes away a thin layer of topsoil. Sometimes eroded material slides downhill. This is caused by wind, water, ice, and gravity.

Deposition and the Different Causes of both Erosion and Weathering Sediment is the material that settles to the bottom of a liquid that has been deposited by wind, water, and ice. Scientists think erosion and weathering caused the formation of the Grand Canyon. http://www.watersheds.org/earth/erosion.htm (It was written by a high school science teacher which could mean this website could be slightly off) http://www.watersheds.org/earth/erosion.htm

Vocabulary Section 1 Weathering: The various mechanical and chemical process that cause exposed rock to decompose. Erosion: The process by which the surface of the Earth is worn away by the action of water, wind, and waves. Deposition: The state of being deposited or precipitated. Sediment: Mineral or organic matter deposited by water, air, or ice. Gravity: The force of attraction that pulls things/objects to the ground.

The Rock Cycle The rock cycle is a model that describes formation, breakdown, and reformation of a rock. It is between the 3 types of rocks: sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic. Rocks can form in 3 ways: compaction, magma, temperature/pressure. The rock that is formed when deposited sediment hardens into a rock is sedimentary rock. www.gsa.org.au/resources/factites/facititesRocks.pdf (It had the rock cycle, a diagram, and a copyright) www.gsa.org.au/resources/factites/facititesRocks.pdf

What are the Rocks Igneous: A rock formed when volcanoes erupt, which causes magma to rise above the earth’s surface. Sedimentary: Rock that has formed through the deposition and solidification of sediment. Metamorphic: Rocks that have been morphed into another kind of rock by a lot of heat and pressure. imnh.isu.edu/digitalatlas/geo/basics/diagrams.htm (It had diagrams and lots of information)

Fossils Fossils are animal bones, footprints, or shells/leafs that have been imprinted into sedimentary rocks. Most fossils form from organisms that have died and been buried into sediments. Sometimes the fossils were from underneath the sea they died, and were compacted into millions of years of sediment build up. www.fi.edu/fellows/fellow1/rocks/create/igneous.htm (It had logical answers and many reliable links) www.fi.edu/fellows/fellow1/rocks/create/igneous.htm

Facts The law of superposition is a standard method that states that rocks are formed in an undisturbed sequence of layers. The geologic time scale is what the order of how things occurred. When two layers of rock are laid down the younger layer is on top. www.scienceguy228.wordpress.com/2008/07/29/north- america-trip-I-the-grand-canyon/ (It had correct facts that made sense) www.scienceguy228.wordpress.com/2008/07/29/north- america-trip-I-the-grand-canyon/

Vocabulary Section 2 Rock cycle: The process by which rocks are reformed, altered, and destroyed. It’s a constant cycle. Igneous rock: Rocks produced in and out of the earth involving intense heat from magma. Sedimentary rock: Rocks that are formed from deposition and sedimentation. They are also formed in layers. Metamorphic rocks: Rocks that were changed from a different type through intense heat and pressure. Fossils: Any remaining impression or remains of a former living thing. Law of Superposition: A key based on observations of natural history that is a principle of sedimentary stratigraphy. Geologic time scale: What order things occurred. www.dictionary.com (It gave us the answers to the vocabulary words) www.dictionary.com
