2. Weathering Weathering is when rocks are broken down into smaller pieces. There are two different types of weathering: chemical and physical Chemical weathering is when there is a chemical change inside a rock. 3. Erosion Erosion is when rocks have been moved from their original position. Erosion is mainly caused by moving water. Sheet erosion is a type of soil erosion in which rain washes away a thin layer of topsoil. Sometimes eroded material slides downhill. This is caused by wind, water, ice, and gravity.

4. Deposition and the Different Causes of both Erosion and Weathering Sediment is the material that settles to the bottom of a liquid that has been deposited by wind, water, and ice. 5. Vocabulary Section 1 Weathering: The various mechanical and chemical process that cause exposed rock to decompose. Erosion: The process by which the surface of the Earth is worn away by the action of water, wind, and waves. Deposition: The state of being deposited or precipitated. Sediment: Mineral or organic matter deposited by water, air, or ice. Gravity: The force of attraction that pulls things/objects to the ground.

6. The Rock Cycle The rock cycle is a model that describes formation, breakdown, and reformation of a rock. It is between the 3 types of rocks: sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic. Rocks can form in 3 ways: compaction, magma, temperature/pressure. 7. What are the Rocks Igneous: A rock formed when volcanoes erupt, which causes magma to rise above the earth’s surface. Sedimentary: Rock that has formed through the deposition and solidification of sediment. 8. Fossils Fossils are animal bones, footprints, or shells/leafs that have been imprinted into sedimentary rocks. Most fossils form from organisms that have died and been buried into sediments. 9. Facts The law of superposition is a standard method that states that rocks are formed in an undisturbed sequence of layers. The geologic time scale is what the order of how things occurred. Igneous rock: Rocks produced in and out of the earth involving intense heat from magma. Sedimentary rock: Rocks that are formed from deposition and sedimentation. They are also formed in layers. Metamorphic rocks: Rocks that were changed from a different type through intense heat and pressure. Fossils: Any remaining impression or remains of a former living thing. Law of Superposition: A key based on observations of natural history that is a principle of sedimentary stratigraphy.
