What is Pi? Pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi is approximately 3.14159265358979323 The equation for pi is (∏ = C/D)

The History of Pi Pi was discovered by the first civilizations for basic engineering skills. The first records were from ancient Babylon. They calculated by taking 3 times the square of radius and gat 3.125 or 25/8. Later Archimedes found the first theoretical calculation. He would inscribe a circle in a regular polygon and a regular polygon in the circle. He got more accurate measurement of pi as 3.1485 The Greeks, Egyptian's, Mayans, Indians, and Chinese all had a ratio for pi. William Jones in 1706 was the first to write pi as ∏ and was adopted in 1737 by Euler as the official symbol. It wouldn’t be till today that a exact calculation of pi consisting of thousands of digits would come from computers.

How Pi is Used to Solve a Problem Pi can be used to find the circumference, diameter, and radius of a circle. For example if you need to find the circumference of something you can use the equation (C = D x ∏). If it has a diameter of four feet then the equation is (C = 4 x ∏). With this you can find the answer which is 12.5.
