Key Dates 1988-1993 Pen Computers at the height of development Target audience was the general consumer; hoped to replace the keyboard (Walker, 2001) Product did not achieve much traction June 2000, Microsoft reintroduced the Tablet PC (Walker, 2001)

Initial goal was to replace keyboards (Walker, 2001) Laptop hardware had improved enough to allow for tablet PCs Goal was to improve productivity of workers Additionally to “replace pads of paper you see in meeting rooms all over the world” (Walker, 2001) Using laptop in a meeting can be rude Tablet PCs take away the need to focus on the computer and allow the user to focus on the meeting

Major Problems Improving handwriting recognition Making it work with every Microsoft application and then some Making it part of the Operating System as opposed to an add on

Target Audience was the “knowledge warrior” (Walker, 2001) Goal was to replace pads of paper with user friendly laptops Audience began to shift to education and healthcare as well
