Characteristics of a Persuasive Paragraph A good persuasive paragraph… Has a purpose, which is to persuade readers to accept a position or take action. Begins with a topic sentence indicating the writer’s position. Has supporting sentences that present facts and opinions to back up the position. Has a closing sentence that restates the writer’s position.
4
What do you need to think about before writing? Who is your audience? You need to know your readers so you will know what to say to convince them. What is the subject of your advertisement? You need to have an opinion about it. What words should I use? You need to use persuasive language to talk your reader into agreeing with you.
5
How do you choose your topic? Ask yourself… Can this topic be supported by facts and details? Will you be able to persuade your readers to agree with you? Can this topic be argued for or against? Is it appropriate for an advertisement? What is your purpose? Is it interesting to your audience?
6
Writing a Strong Topic Sentence The topic sentence should clearly state the author’s opinion about the topic. It should capture the readers’ interest and make them want to know more. It will be restated to help you write your strong closing sentence.
7
Writing Your First Draft Remember to use words that express how you feel. Your words should affect your readers’ emotions. Keep your readers interested so you can convince them.
8
Persuasive Voice – Word Choice Use strong and convincing words. Use a voice that will make your audience want your product or service. Use a voice that will convince your reader by making the subject sound exciting, valuable, or special.
9
Persuasive Voice – Active Voice Use the “active voice”: Active Voice: Hannah drove the car. Passive Voice: The car was driven by Hannah. The active voice is more interesting. It makes the writer sound more confident and firm, which helps them persuade readers to agree with them. It helps show your reader how much you care about your subject.
