General Johnson lost his life while directing his troops from the front lines. Almost 100,000 troops have faced each other and almost 24,000 ended as casualties. On the morning of April 6 Johnston’s force surprised Grant in an attack that slowly pushed the union troops back from the high ground they occupied.
