1 KU Revision

2 ‘How Important’ Questions
In this sort of question you will be asked how important something is You are expected to discuss what is in the question and other important factors too. You must make a judgement (i.e. answer the question) or you will lose a mark.

3 For Example: ‘How important was the Naval Arms Race in causing the First World War?’ Obviously you need to write about the Naval Arms Race, but what else could you include in your answer?

4 Remember …. Explaining how important something was does not mean describe it! For example: If you are asked how important the Assassinations at Sarajevo were do not describe them. What could you write about the importance of the assassinations?

5 8-Mark Essays In an 8 Mark essay marks are awarded as follows: 2 Marks for process (structure): intro, paragraphs and conclusion. 6 Marks for knowledge.

6 If one of your intro, paragraphs or conclusion is missing, you get 1 process mark.
If two or more are missing you get no process marks. You have to get at least 3/6 for knowledge or you won’t get any process marks at all.

7 You should have 6 short paragraphs in the main part of your essay, each about a separate point.
You can get up to two marks for explaining a point well.

8 Plan your essay Write a wee list of the 6 things you are going to write about in the main part in the margin.
