Success criteria: To achieve a C grade: You need to be able to explain the meaning of conflict and reconciliation To achieve a B grade: You need to be able to categorise opinions To achieve an A grade: You need to be able to explain your own viewpoint and compare it to others These are all things that may annoy you or persuade you to ask for a divorce Rank the cards in order of least to most acceptable

She has befriended Robert a divorce lawyer, who is trying to find a way to get rid of her. In this scene, she is waiting at his office while he takes a meeting with a client. Pay particular attention to Giselle's reaction to the concept of divorce, and to the different views about relationships that Robert and Giselle reveal Why was Giselle so horrified at the idea that Phoebe and her husband Ethan were going to separate 'for ever and ever?

What makes a strong relationship?

Nowadays.... Divorce used to be difficult to obtain and so very few divorces took place People were looked down on if they were divorced It was impossible for them to re-marry in church Divorce is a normal part of life There has been a great increase in the number of divorces It is now estimated that more then two in five marriages will end in divorce!

Success criteria: To achieve a C grade: You need to be able to explain the meaning of conflict and reconciliation To achieve a B grade: You need to be able to categorise opinions To achieve an A grade: You need to be able to explain your own viewpoint and compare it to others The removal of legal and financial barriers – divorce became cheaper and more grounds for divorce were acceptable (before it was only for adultery or cruelty) Changing expectations of marriage – women wanted to be treated fairly and have as good as life as their husbands Independence – Women could afford to live independently after a divorce Demographic changes – Before many women died in childbirth so men would re-marry. Nowadays most divorces occur after 10 years which was the average length of marriage 100 years ago.

Do you think that problems in a relationship (married or otherwise) can be overcome? If so, how?

What are the pressures on a marriage? Sort the pressures into order (Most testing to least testing)
