1 HOW DOES THE PLATYPUS USE ITS UNIQUE BODY TO FEED ITSELF? USE THE LIBRARY TO FIND OUT & PRESENT YOUR WORK By Mr. Von Hoppe, JHS 226Q Standards: ELA 1, MST 2 & 4 AIM: SWBAT use library resources, including computers, to learn how the PLATYPUS gathers food, and share their findings in a “Glogster” page.

2 Begin the Inquiry Process:  Subject terms: Platypus, monotreme, Australian animals  Books in the CCD “animals” collection: Call #591, 599.  Books: encyclopedias, such as Volume P, A, & M.  Locate these books through the OPAC: www.nylearns.org/dvonhoppe (click on “catalog”) www.nylearns.org/dvonhoppe  Online Databases: use my portaportal site: www.portatportal.com Type “ms226library” in “Guest Access”. I recommend Grolier. www.portatportal.com  Investigate: what is a monotreme?

3 What is the 226Q CCD collection?  The Cooperative Collection Development, or “CCD”, collection at 27Q226 will be used in these Science lessons. The CCD collection is a large group of books and videos about pets and wild creatures of the air, land and sea, and the environments they live in. The Animals CCD collection offers a wide variety of reading levels, has a wealth of illustrations and subjects, and has many individual titles and sets of specific wildlife encyclopedias. The collection contains over 3000 volumes. The purpose of the collection is to help children learn about the living environment while motivating them to read and discover the living planet they inhabit.  The call # range is: 508—639.

6 Show off your skills by giving credit to your sources!

7 You have gathered your research. You have trustworthy information, images, sources and links. Register at www.glogster.com and “poster” your findings, visually!www.glogster.com After you research, put your findings on Glogster.com!

8 Lastly, work with your group to create a glogster page, showing your findings on how the Platypus feeds itself. Remember to save your work frequently. You can import images to the hard drive & attach to your glogster page!
