2  Took place April 12-14, 1861 in Charleston, South Carolina.  Confederate opened fire on the fort.  Ended in the surrender of Fort Sumter.

3  On April 10, 1861, General Beauregard demanded the surrender of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Garrison commander Anderson refused.  On April 12, the Confederate batteries opened fire on the fort, causing the beginning of the civil war.

4  The Confederate army marched toward the Union fort, opening fire.  After the first shot was fired, there was not a single point where there weren’t bullets flying, until the fort was surrendered.

5  As the start of one of the bloodiest wars in history, it is ironic that the Attack of Fort Sumter had no casualties.

6  At 2:30 the belongings were loaded onto the ship while the white flag of surrender was taken down.  The tattered United States flag was fixed to the pole, waiting to be hoisted over Fort Sumter once more.

7  In Washington DC, Lincoln called a Cabinet meeting to issue a call for troops to be provided by the state militia system.  100,000 were suggested, but it seemed to be too large. Lincoln finally settled on 75,000.  However he could not raise an army. That was the job of Congress, which wouldn’t be in session until December. The Cabinet called for a special session to begin on the Fourth of July. Secretary of State Seward was against it, urging Lincoln to act on his own.
